He despertado.

No me detiene la sociedad, ni el dinero. La falta de fortuna y la mala suerte me valen madres!

Todo toma forma y color, dirección y sentido. Todo es más concreto y excitante.

Me entrego a mi misma.

The Slight Edge

I love bumping into good stuff. Don’t we all? I particularly love it when it is timely, and appropriate. As if I needed further proof that the Universe is always listening, always attentive, always in tune with my thoughts, my desires, my needs…

About three weeks ago, I was at my weekly networking meeting when our Chapter’s director suggested -in passing- a book by the name of “The Slight Edge”. Being that his suggestions are usually geared toward networking and the sort, and because I have been up to my knees and read (as of late) way too many books on networking, I made a quick note about the book and set it aside, with the intention of purchasing, and reading it after I read material on other subjects. I didn’t want to forget about it, so I scribbled the title on a piece of paper and taped it to my monitor at work. This system -the note taped to the monitor- has worked well for me thus far. The note is not removed until the book is purchased, the errand is ran, the phone call is made, etc. Since clutter bothers me, seeing the note in front of me prompts me to do whatever the note says as soon as I possibly can so I can remove it permanently. When a note is removed, I never think about it again. The absence of notes taped to my monitor, means I have one less thing to think (because I have made the conscious decision to ‘think’, I don’t ‘worry’) about.

Last Friday around noon, I heard a happy shriek coming from the front office. Fortunately, I work with wonderful people that find pleasure in the little things and make the whole workday experience quite pleasurable. This time, the yelps were in response to the daily UPS delivery. Soon after, my seester from another meester (AKA one of my closest friends) and -thank my lucky stars- my coworker; barged into my office carrying two books in hand:

“Mona! Your birthday gifts just arrived! I wanted to get you something that you really wanted, so I took the note from your monitor and here are your books!”

Seriously? My smile could not be bigger or brighter! Here she comes, bringing me the books that I planned on getting… Ah, the sweetness! Friendship is certainly a boundless treasure!

And that is how I came about my copy of “The Slight Edge”, by Jeff Olson.

I am not the ‘cynical’ kind, but, quite honestly, my immediate thoughts were: “Yup, here’s another self-help book…” But, curious as I am (and that, is a good thing!), and facing a 4-hour road trip, I dove into its pages… What a pleasant surprise! No, pleasant is not the right word. It is and it isn’t. It was pleasant, refreshing, honest… actually useful! And I found it useful within the first 20 pages. Jeff Olson’s words are honest, humble, and packed with kind wisdom. I found myself immersed in the content; continuously making mental notes, padding my own back while recognizing the principles that I’ve intuitively followed most of my adult life, and committing myself to small, but permanent disciplines that will transform my already fulfilled life.

I do not strive for fame, or luxury. I know and believe that happiness is the Art of appreciating every moment, whether it be joyful or sad. I do, however, welcome any and all knowledge that will allow me to share this concept with you.

Please, do yourself (and the world) a great big favor, and grab a copy of this book right now!

It might just transform your life for the better 🙂

As always, I want to clarify that I am in no way associated with Jeff Olson or “The Slight Edge”, or any other book or product that I might recommend in these pages. I am merely boasting about a lovely find that really has come through for me.

Rose Petal Witch Hazel

I bumped into this product about 6 months ago at Alameda Natural Grocery, and immediately fell in love with everything about it: it smells like roses (duh!), it is so mild and gentle, yet leaves my skin clean and visibly toned and moisturized. Contains no alcohol or yucky parabens.  It can be used by any and all skin types; and it costs anywhere from $9 to $12! Yay for cheap pampering!

Before I continue, I should clarify that I am in no way associated with the makers of this, or any other product that I might recommend in these pages. I am merely boasting about a lovely find that really has come through for me.

This is what can be read on the back of the label:

“Over 120 years ago, Rose Thayer, niece of Henry Thayer M.D., developed an all natural recipe for extra-soft, youthful-looking skin. As she aged, many would comment on how she always looked 10 years younger than she was. Now, for the first time, her secret formula of Rose Petal water blended with Witch Hazel extract, aloe Vera and Vitamin E, is being made available. Hydrates dry skin, moisturizes delicate skin. Roses secret to looking 10 years younger… Naturally.”

People’s skin care rituals vary greatly depending on many factors: age, skin type, lifestyle, environment, etc. Mine is simple, yet highly effective:

1. Cleanse: I use an organic, soap-free cleanser every evening, to remove makeup and impurities; you can find them online or at natural foods markets, such as Whole Foods Market.

2. Tone: I tone my face with Thayers Rose Witch Hazel every day as soon as I wake up, and after cleansing in the evening. Thayers has several different witch hazels, each crafted for a different skin type, do a little research, and find your ONE!

3. Moisturize: While each step is as important as the last, I consider moisturizing the true difference between well-cared for skin, and bleh-skin. I prefer an organic, rich and creamy moisturizer that is not heavy and does not clog my pores, and I moisturize every day, right after toning.

That’s it. I said it was simple, and I wasn’t kidding. I am 39 years old and this is what my skin looks like:

Each skin type is different, and I encourage you to learn about your skin type before deciding on a skin care ritual and making any purchases.

It is so easy to get caught in all the ‘blemish-free’, ‘wrinkle-free’, ‘renewed skin’ promises from the bevvy of ‘skin care’ manufacturers and ‘professionals’ throughout the world. The fact is, they just want to sell their products, and sad as it is, and without getting in too deep, many of these products are made with ingredients that you wouldn’t want anywhere near you, much less, on your skin. Oh! And don’t let me get started with animal testing or fair practices… We’ll get to that at some point, but not today.

What I will say is: read your labels! If you don’t know an ingredient, write it down before you purchase the item. Google it! Get informed! Find out what it is and what it does!

Keep it simple! The simpler, the better!

If you have any questions or comments, please reach out! I am not a “know-it-all”, but I will do my best to point you in the right direction.

Once, when I was really having a challenging time, I asked my rabbi what I should do to alleviate my miserable state(really!) He looked at me, stroked his beard and finally said “Go for the Joy.” I try to remember that mantra in my daily approach. As the holidays approach, I know that in the process of bringing good cheer and tidings, I may encounter some very grumpy, stressed-out folks. I make a vow to find the joy no matter how small and to try and be of service wherever possible. This attitude helps me focus my attention on others and feels good when I witness unexpected acts of kindness paying it forward.
Go for the gold, seize Joy!

I found that talking daily to a friend and telling her three things that went well, three things that I did well, one thing I’d like to work on in the next 24 hours, and one thing that made me laugh, helps me feel connected, feeds my hopefulness and starves my resentments. Go find a Gratitude Buddy right now and notice how your life morphs! Just be prepared to hang on to your wings!
Save $100-$250

Who’s your momma?

“If momma is not happy, let’s face it: nobody is happy!”

Doggie Bear, the big 'momma' 'round here!

Who the eff is “momma”?
That word alone is subject to interpretation…
In a very mundane context, “momma” is the word that describes ‘mother’, a ‘motherly figure’, or an ‘authoritative being’. The latter, is a much broader term, and it encompasses, but is not limited to: gramma, gf, bff, bf, dad, pops, boss, jefe, chief… You surely catch my drift, and if you don’t, well, we now have something to converse about.
Who’s your momma?
Before you go about trying to make your ‘momma’ happy, ask yourself: “Who is your momma?”
Is it possible, that you have been trying to make others happy before you? Is it possible that you have been trying to make ‘momma’ happy just so you can be happy yourself?
Have you ever considered the fact that if don’t work on yourself first and foremost, you will never be able to truly be happy?
Ahhh… Food for thought!
Over the next few weeks, we are going to expose, analyze, and discuss the elements of happiness.
Why?  Why not? Because I said so! (That’s what yo’ momma said, and she is -almost- always right!)
These are the subjects to look forward to:
Emotional Health:
– PURGE (Unhealthy habits, habits of thought, dalliances, etc.)
– Love YOU!
– Love the one(s) you live with
– Love what you do
– Love your surroundings

SO much MORE to come…

REMEMBER: This is a community effort, your voice is welcome and expected: it better be loud and clear!
SHARE your thoughts, you are among friends!

a warm welcome to healthy and happy today!

My sweet Abuelita ❤

My beautiful grandmother is 86 years young, and she looks and acts as if she were in her 50’s.

She is the matriarch of my family, and a quintessential inspiration to me, and many others.

She has organically uncovered the ‘secret’ to everlasting youth and health.

The ‘secret’ as it turns out, is not so secret. It is simple, beyond accessible, yet largely unobtainable…

Because it requires a large conscious shift; and a few practical lifestyle changes.

So, what is the ‘secret’?

But, before we continue…

This site is many-a-thing:

– Safe haven

Last but not least, any and all information contain within this website is merely advice and opinions based upon the knowledge of simple and kind people, like you and me!
